“Searing Beauty- Songs from the Australian Bushland”

“Last fall, I spent 3 months in Australia, documenting the unique and extraordinary endemic plants and animals. As this was peak summer down under, bushfires tore through the country decimating forests and creatures. With this show, I wanted to illustrate the unusual beauty of the land, its plants and animals, to show what might be lost with world-altering climate change. Australia is a hotspot for biodiversity. What struck me was the resilience as well as the fragility of their unique biota.
These images are photogravures, a technique I learned in Australia. I printed these etched plates here at DPW and added water colour to some. I did a series of six birds, just 4” X 4”, printed small and intimate – as if we could hold them in our hands to protect them. “

Dundarave Print Workshop + Gallery on Granville Island is seeking members
Who we are:
Dundarave Print Workshop is an artist-run, non-profit printmaking society operating since 1971. Members share a studio space and a small gallery for exhibitions. Printmaking classes are offered to the public in the winter and fall seasons. The studio accommodates printmaking methods such as intaglio, monotype and relief printmaking. It accommodates 28 members.

Course Title: Introduction to Etching: Hard Ground

Course Description
This class is an introduction to intaglio techniques on copper. We will focus on line quality using hard ground and a mordant. We will also explore the tactile possibilities of combining etched lines with drypoint. No printmaking experience is necessary. Students will learn basic shop safety, manual press operation, how to prepare a plate for hard ground, and how to ink and print a plate. Everyone will have the opportunity to print a small edition of etchings. Students will be required to supply their own paper and Solvex nitrile gloves – all available at Opus on Granville Island.
Instructor Bio
Erin has a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University and has been working as an illustrator and artist for over a decade with a focus on etching and linocut. Her prints, which tell stories and are influenced by mythology and fantasy, have been featured in numerous magazines across Canada. Erin regularly teaches classes at Dundarave.

Using various printmaking techniques, artists Karen Nguyen and Patricia Gaspar explore their creative evolutions through their art processes. Gaspar (Argentina) uses her art to exhibit personal experiences and Nguyen (Canada) uses her art to explore the creative process itself.

Small is relative to size, to gesture, to action. What is seemingly small compared to one thing is huge in relation to something else. A small action can change the course of human history. “Small-ish” is the visual interpretation of what is considered small to the participating artists. It’s all about perspective, and it’s all relative.

Small format framed prints by Dundarave artists are hung throughout the gallery with new work being added as pieces sell, so check in often. Unframed works are available as well and we can ship anywhere. Perfect for gift giving!
Gift certificates are also available for artwork or classes.
In December the gallery is open 7 days/week, 11- 5 pm.
